The short answer. To get your business recommended by AI assistants, claim 3 records: a Google Business Profile, a free Apple Business place card and a Yelp page. Muse, Instinct, Dots and Grok keep no listing, so publish prices and reply the same day. 45% of US consumers used AI for local recommendations in the past year (BrightLocal, 2026).
Key facts.
- A client in the US can ask 11 AI assistants for a salon, and 3 of them give the salon something to claim, by my read of each company's own pages and filings on October 2, 2026.
- 45% of US consumers used an AI tool for a local recommendation in the past year, up from 6%, in BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults.
- ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the 350,000 locations SOCi tracked, against 35.9% that made Google's map pack, in SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index.
- 16 of the 61 salon websites Google shows for balayage in Scottsdale showed a price, by our own read of each site on October 1, 2026.
- 4 of the 12 Bay Area med spas that Instinct emailed for a laser treatment answered with a quote, in a run done by an advisor to our company in September 2026.
There are 11 AI assistants a client in the US can now ask for a salon, and only 3 of them give you something to claim. Google AI Mode reads a verified Google Business Profile plus a connected booking partner. Siri reads an Apple Business place card, which is free. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Yelp Assistant and Alexa+ lean on your Yelp page, so one claimed page covers 4 of them. The other 4, Meta's Muse, Instinct, OpenAI's Dots and xAI's Grok, have no listing at all. They read the open web, then they email you or call you.
Which AI assistants recommend local businesses, and what does each one read?
11, as of October 2, 2026. 3 give you something to claim, 4 have no listing.
| Assistant | Who makes it | Recommends local businesses | Contacts you | Books | What you can claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muse | Meta | Yes. Meta has not published where it gets place data | Phone calls to US businesses since Sep 17 2026, and an email address of its own announced Sep 23 | No salon booking partner published | Nothing. Muse for Small Business is a tool for the owner, not a listing |
| Instinct | Spear Street Technology, San Francisco (not OpenAI) | Yes, by browsing the web with its own computer | Email from mail.instinct.com since Sep 9 2026, phone calls through Instinct Concierge since Sep 17 | Yes, through your site, a form, or a call | Nothing. Invite-only since Aug 2026 |
| Dots | OpenAI | Not a documented feature | Not documented | Not documented | Nothing |
| Grok and Grok Bot | xAI | From public X posts and a live web search. No map or directory published | No calling feature found | Not documented | Nothing |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI | Yes. Bing's index, and Yelp ratings and reviews since Jul 2026 | Yelp Request a Quote inside ChatGPT is "coming soon" | Restaurants. No salon booking found | Indirect: a claimed Yelp page and a Bing Places listing |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Yes | Phone calls for price, availability and bookings, which you can switch off in your profile settings | Yes, through Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro, with no extra fee on Booksy | A verified Google Business Profile plus a connected booking partner | |
| Siri | Apple | Yes, from Apple Maps place cards, which show Yelp ratings | No | Through the Book or Schedule Appointment link on your place card | Apple Business, free |
| Perplexity | Perplexity | Yes, Yelp cards and a map since Mar 2024 | No | No salon booking found | Indirect: the Yelp page |
| Yelp Assistant | Yelp | Yes | Sends you a Request a Quote. About 10% of all Yelp quote requests came this way in Q2 2026 | Vagaro on iOS, for haircuts, massages and nails | Your Yelp page, with Request a Quote on and Vagaro connected |
| Alexa+ | Amazon | Yes | Through its booking partners | Vagaro today. Square (spas, hair and nail salons, barbershops), Yelp and Angi announced for 2026 | Nothing direct. Be bookable on Vagaro or Square and listed on Yelp |
| Copilot | Microsoft | Yes, a Bing map and a list | No | No salon booking found | Bing Places |

How do AI assistants choose which businesses to recommend?
An AI assistant recommends the business it can read, reach and book.
The old way is a list. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Siri, Alexa+ and Copilot pull from somebody's directory. Our 15-prompt test shows how ChatGPT recommends local businesses. Yelp told its shareholders its "ratings and reviews recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience" (Yelp Q2 2026). ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the 350,000 locations SOCi tracked, against 35.9% that made Google's map pack (SOCi).
The new way is a reader. Muse, Instinct, Dots and Grok Bot open a browser. Instinct "uses its own phone number and computer" (TechCrunch). A reader recommends the salon whose services, prices and hours it could read, because that is the one it can compare.
The newest way is a caller. When the reader cannot find the answer, it asks you. Instinct "can use its own email to contact a restaurant about a special request, ask a business about availability" (TechCrunch). Muse added calls to US businesses on September 17 (TechCrunch) and its own email address on September 23 (Meta Connect). Google calls to "confirm the pricing and availability" of a service, and its help page gives the sentence that stops it, "Please remove my business from your list" (Google).
So your salon is scored on 3 layers:
- Can it read you? Every service with a price, hours, address, phone, policy, and a booking link that opens, the same on your site, Google profile, Apple card and Yelp page.
- Do you answer? When it emails or calls, a price and a slot come back the same day.
- Can it book you? A live booking link or a connected partner it can finish on without a human.
How thin the first layer is: on October 1 we read the websites of the salons Google shows for balayage in Scottsdale and the massage businesses it shows for a 90-minute deep tissue. 16 of 61 salon sites showed a balayage price. 34 of 105 massage sites showed the deep tissue price. A reader passing the other 45 salons has nothing to compare.
And the second: an advisor to our company gave Instinct a laser treatment to find. It shortlisted 12 Bay Area med spas and emailed them. 4 answered with a quote. 6 never replied. 1 bounced. 1 sent back a form. Finding the 12 was never the hard part.
Marketing for a salon was always one thing: people nearby want what she does, other salons do it too, and she wins when she is the one chosen where the two meet. Where they meet has moved 4 times in 30 years. Now it is a machine that reads, asks and books, and it does all 3 before she knows a client was looking.
Where a salon can and cannot be listed
Google, Apple, Yelp and Bing take a listing. Muse, Instinct, Dots and Grok have none.
Credit first, because 3 companies did real work here. Google wired beauty bookings into AI Mode for every US Search Labs user on November 4, 2025 (TechCrunch), with "NO extra fees" on Booksy (Booksy), and AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users this spring (Google I/O 2026). Apple Business has been free since April 14 (MacRumors), and a Square seller can put a Book link on the place card since September 24 (Square).
BUT the 4 growing fastest built no front door for you. Muse crossed 5 million US downloads in 22 days, faster than ChatGPT, Grok or Claude (9to5Mac, citing Sensor Tower), and Meta has not said where it gets its place data. Muse for Small Business, announced September 29, connects an owner's Instagram, Facebook Page, ad account and QuickBooks so Muse can do her office work (Engadget). An owner tool, not a listing.
There is a reason nobody built the door for you, and it is not laziness. A directory is a list the maker has to keep clean. A reader that browses the web is not. For Meta or Spear Street the second is cheaper and never out of date. The cost moved to you. Your site, your inbox and your phone are the listing now.
One caution. Some of Muse's early business calls were completed by human contractors, which Meta rolled back after it was reported (TechSpot, via Reuters). Whoever is on the line, give the price, the slot and the booking link.
None of this is on page one. On October 2 I read the 4 pages I could open that rank for this search: 0 name Muse, Instinct or Dots, 0 say which assistant has a listing you can claim, 0 mention an assistant calling or emailing you, 1 carries a sourced number, 0 mention a salon.
What should a salon do this week, assistant by assistant?
Claim Google, Apple, Yelp and Bing, in this order. About 2 hours for one location.
- Google (AI Mode, Gemini). Verify the profile, list every service with its price, connect a booking partner Google names, as in how a salon gets booked by Google AI Mode. Leave Google's calls on, because switching them off costs you the booking the call was placed to make.
- Apple (Siri). Claim your place card at Apple Business, free, add a Book link, and check the category. In our September read of Apple Business Connect and Bing Places for 20 top Google salons, Apple had 4 of 10 nail winners under the wrong one.
- Yelp (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Yelp Assistant, Alexa+). Claim the page, turn on Request a Quote, connect Vagaro if you are on it, and keep services and prices identical to the Google profile.
- Bing Places (Copilot, ChatGPT search). 15 minutes, once. OpenAI's VP of engineering called Bing "an important one" of ChatGPT's search sources (Search Engine Roundtable).
- Muse, Instinct, Dots, Grok. Nothing to claim, so do the 3 layers: a page per service with a price, one reply rule for the inbox and the phone (price, slot, booking link, same day), and a booking link that finishes without a call.
The step that slips is keeping every service, price and hour the same on all 4 records after a price changes in March. That is the job the Discovery Agent at Zoca was built to carry.
Where Zoca fits
This article is about 2 of the 3 ways the front door breaks: the assistant cannot read you, so it never names you, or it finds you, emails or calls, and nobody answers. Here is the job when Zoca is hired for it.
The read, before you pay. Your zip code in your numbers: how many people nearby are looking for each thing you do, which salon comes up first, how fast they add reviews, which services Google does not know you offer, and where your 4 records disagree. The free website audit checks the page a reader opens, and the free Google Business Profile Optimizer scores the profile Google's calls come from.
Two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent writes and keeps the service pages with prices, and keeps the Google profile, the Apple card, the Yelp page and the Bing listing saying the same thing. The Front Desk Agent answers the call and the text at 9pm with a price and a slot, the hours in which roughly 52% of inquiries arrived across the 3,709 customer calls we mined between December 2025 and July 2026. The Booking Agent runs bookings and payments free, so an assistant has a link it can finish on. Your half: reviews at a pace we agree on, photos of your work every week, and the Apple and Yelp claims, made in your name. The limits: the Discovery and Front Desk agents are paid hires (pricing). An email from Instinct lands in your inbox, and that reply is still yours. Where an assistant keeps no listing, we cannot list you. We can only make you the salon it can read.
One of 3 answers. Sometimes next week, because your prices were never written anywhere a machine could find them. Sometimes 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, because 3 salons on your street have a page per service and you have one. And sometimes not yet, because nobody nearby is asking for what you want to be found for, or you have 11 reviews against 40 salons. Not yet is an answer we give before your card is out.
The Friday report. One sentence on the week, then a line each: reviews ahead or behind, photos done, what Zoca did, each service getting ahead of the salon on the corner or holding top 3, which record drifted, and what to do this week. It lives on your screen, not in an account manager's head.
How we know
The table comes from each company's own page or filing where one exists, and from the reporting in the front matter where it does not. Two things I could not verify and left out: where Muse gets its place data, which Meta has not published. And Grok's sources from xAI itself, whose pages refused the read, so the table carries Local Falcon's description, "social content, real-time events, and the open web" (Local Falcon).
The Phoenix read is ours: on October 1 we opened the websites of the 61 salons Google surfaces for balayage in the Scottsdale area and the 105 massage businesses it surfaces for deep tissue, and counted the ones showing a price before booking. The Instinct run was done by an advisor to our company in September 2026. I report her counts.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI assistant business listing?
Not one that covers them all. Google AI Mode reads your verified Google Business Profile and a connected booking partner. Siri reads your free Apple Business place card. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Yelp Assistant and Alexa+ lean on your Yelp page. Muse, Instinct, Dots and Grok have no listing.
How do I show up in AI search?
Be the salon the assistant can read, answer and book: every service with a price on your site, the same on your Google, Apple and Yelp records, a same-day reply with a price and a slot, and a booking link it can finish on. In our Phoenix read, 16 of 61 balayage salons published the price.
How do I get found by AI agents that have no listing, like Muse or Instinct?
Nothing to register, so the work is on your own site and inbox. Instinct emails and Muse calls US businesses, and the salon that replies first with a price and a slot is the one the agent can act on. In an advisor's Instinct run, 4 of 12 med spas answered.
What does AI visibility mean for a local business?
It means whether an assistant names you when a client nearby asks, and whether it can finish the booking. ChatGPT recommended only 1.2% of the 350,000 locations SOCi tracked in its 2026 Local Visibility Index, against 35.9% that reached Google's map pack (SOCi).
