Google AI Mode for local business: how a salon gets booked by Google and Gemini

By Ashish Verma, founder and CEO of Zoca. Last updated October 3, 2026.

The short answer. Yes, and there is a path you can claim. Google AI Mode local business booking works for a salon with a correct Google Business Profile and a calendar on Booksy, Fresha or Vagaro, the partners AI Mode has booked through since November 17, 2025 (Google). Google also phones salons to check prices. Answer those calls.

Key facts.

  • Google AI Mode has booked beauty and wellness appointments for US Search Labs users through 3 partners, Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro, since November 17, 2025, per Google's announcement.
  • AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, with searches more than doubling every quarter, per Google's I/O 2026 update.
  • 26% of Google's AI pricing calls went unanswered, and 49% of the answered calls gave no price, in Invoca's study of calls from July to November 2025 across 6 industries, hair salons among them.
  • A business sat in the top 3 on 24% of searches at its own address and on 5% of them 5 miles out, across the 23 beauty and wellness businesses, 636 searches and 5,615 map positions our engine had scanned by September 26, 2026.
  • A balayage price was published on 16 of the 61 salon websites Google surfaces for the Phoenix area, in our site read on October 1, 2026.

Unlike most of the assistants in the news, Google gives a salon a path it can claim: a Google Business Profile that is right, and a booking app Google can write into. AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May, with searches more than doubling every quarter (Google, I/O 2026). And Google now phones salons on a client's behalf to check a price and an open slot. You can switch those calls off in your profile settings. Here is why that is the one thing I would not do.

What Google does with a salon today

Google does 3 jobs for a client who wants a salon: it calls for a price, it books through a partner calendar, and Gemini now calls too. In this order.

In January 2025 Google started "Ask for Me" in Search Labs. It "uses AI to call local businesses on your behalf, for information about availability and pricing," beginning with nail salons and auto shops (TechCrunch, Jan 30 2025). In November 2025 AI Mode started booking. In Google's words, it "will search across multiple reservation platforms and websites to find real-time availability," and the client finishes "through partners like" Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro (Google, Nov 17 2025). At I/O in May 2026, Google said that for "home repair, beauty or pet care, you can ask Google to call businesses on your behalf," rolling out "to everyone in the U.S. this summer" (Google). Then in September, Gemini got a phone of its own. Call for Me, on the Pixel 11 for US subscribers, started "at a small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced" (TechCrunch, Sep 24 2026).

Credit where it is due. Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro built the calendars that made this possible, and there is a reason they were the ones at the table. For 30 years the industry built the half of a salon's business that could be counted, an appointment happened or it did not, and that half got a calendar, a card on file, and a door other programs can write through. The half that finds the client never got built that way, because nobody could promise a number for it. When Google went looking for something to connect to, the calendar was the only part of a salon that was wired.

BUT the calendar is the last step. Before AI Mode books you, it has to find you, and usually it has to call you, and someone has to pick up.

How do I get my business on Google AI Mode?

Get 3 layers right: the profile Google reads, the calendar it writes to, and the phone it calls.

Layer 1: the profile that gets read. AI Mode has no list of salons of its own. It reads Google's. When Carrie Hill at Sterling Sky asked Google to price a haircut in Rifle, Colorado in December 2025, she sent the request at 1:30pm and had a results email at 1:41pm, 11 minutes later. Her read of who got the calls: "The AI typically targets the top-ranking local businesses in the Google Map Pack" (Sterling Sky, Dec 11 2025).

Across the 23 beauty and wellness businesses our engine had scanned by September 26, 636 searches and 5,615 map positions, a business sat in the top 3 on 24% of searches at her own address, and on 5% of them 5 miles out. The pack is a neighborhood. If Google does not know you do balayage, or you come up 9th for it on your own street, the client's AI never dials your number. The profile work is what it has always been: the right primary category, every service listed with a price, hours that match the door, reviews that name the service. What changed is who reads it.

Layer 2: the calendar that gets written to. AI Mode books through Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro (Google). Booksy says there are no extra fees and no additional commission on a booking that comes through AI Mode, and asks only that a salon keep "services and calendar fully updated in Booksy" with "Booksy and Google profiles connected" (Booksy, Nov 20 2025). Fresha's own count shows the size of the pipe: more than 30,000 of its businesses use its Google booking connection each month, carrying over 1,200,000 appointments a month across Google Search, Maps and Gemini (Fresha, Feb 23 2026).

If your calendar is on one of those 3, that connection is the most valuable switch on your profile this year, and it costs nothing to flip. If it is on something else, AI Mode can still find you and call you, but it cannot write into your calendar.

Layer 3: the phone that gets answered. This is the layer nobody writes about, and it is the one leaking. Invoca tracked Google's AI pricing calls from July to November 2025 across auto repair, hair salons, wellness centers, vets, pest control and plumbing. 26% of the calls went unanswered. Of the calls a person did answer, 49% "did not provide Google's AI with pricing information" (Invoca, Dec 10 2025). The calls rose 324% in November over October. Put the 2 numbers together and Google's AI got a price on roughly 1 call in 3.

In our Phoenix read on October 1, a balayage price was published on 16 of the 61 salon websites Google surfaces for the area. Google calls to ask the price because the price is not written down.

What do Gemini and Google AI Mode read from my Google Business Profile?

They read what a person reads on your listing: category, services and prices, hours, phone number, reviews, and the Book button. The same profile now serves 2 sides.

On the owner's side, since June 10, 2026 you can connect your Business Profile to the Gemini app and ask it to "update your operating hours, post seasonal updates or identify gaps in your profile" (Google, Jun 10 2026). We counted how business hours affect Google Maps ranking separately.

On the client's side, 45% of US consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the past year, up from 6% the year before, and 23% used Google's AI Mode for it, second only to ChatGPT at 31% (BrightLocal, 1,002 US adults, Mar 2026). The other assistants are in how to get your business recommended by AI assistants. Your profile fields are now the answers an assistant gives on your behalf, and the questions it phones you about are the ones you left blank.

What do I do when Google's AI calls my business?

Pick up, give it the price and the next open slot, and do not opt out.

Google's own page says it plainly: "Google might contact your business on their behalf through an automated phone call to complete the request," for "booking appointments," "checking restaurant wait times," and "confirming price and availability of products and services" (Google Business Profile Help). In the US it runs in every state except Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska.

You can opt out 2 ways. On the call, say "Please remove my business from your list." In the profile, open Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, and switch off the options under "Google automated calls and text messages." Gemini's Call for Me has a separate opt-out at g.co/gemini/opt-out, and every one of its calls opens by "disclosing that it's an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf" (Gemini Apps Help).

Now the part I would underline. The call is the client. Someone within driving distance wanted your service enough to ask Google to find it, and Google phoned you because you were one of the names it picked. Sterling Sky's results email listed the salons the AI reached, and separately "the businesses they were not able to reach" (Sterling Sky). Opting out moves you to the second list for every client who asks. A salon on that list did not lose to a better salon. It lost to a salon that picked up. It is the same break as Google Business Profile views but no calls.

What to say takes 20 seconds. The price, or the starting price if it depends on hair length. The next open slot that fits. The booking link, if it wants one. Do not ask the caller to call back, because it will not. And if the call comes at 7pm on a Tuesday with the desk dark, that is the hour we built the Front Desk Agent for: it picks up the automated call the way it picks up a client, with the price and the slot, and books where your calendar allows.

Where Zoca fits

This article is about the first of the 3 ways the front door breaks, and a new form of the third: the client's AI reads the map and calls the pack, so a salon invisible for "balayage" on her own street never gets the call, and when the call comes, nobody picks up, or picks up without a price. Here is the job when Zoca is hired for it.

The read, before you pay. We look at your zip code in your numbers: how many people nearby are looking for each thing you do, which salon comes up first for each, on your street and 5 miles out, and which of your services Google does not know you offer. The free Google Business Profile Optimizer scores the profile AI Mode reads, before anyone pays anything.

Two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent keeps the profile, the service pages with their prices, and the listings saying the same thing, so Google finds you for the services you want booked. The Front Desk Agent answers the call, the client's and the AI's, with the price and the slot, after hours too. The Booking Agent runs bookings and payments free, so a client can be traced from the search to the chair. Your half: reviews at a pace we agree on, counted as how many clients you ask, photos of the work every week, and a price written down for every service, because that is the question Google is calling to ask. One limit, said plainly: AI Mode books through Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro today, and the Booking Agent is not one of those three. If your calendar is on one of them, keep that connection on and we work the two layers above it. The Discovery and Front Desk agents are paid hires (pricing), and a booking written into another company's calendar depends on what that calendar allows.

One of 3 answers. Sometimes next week, because you are the best-reviewed salon on the street and Google does not know you do the service people are asking for. Sometimes 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, because 4 salons on your street hold the top 3 for it and your pages do not exist yet. And sometimes not yet, because that service is out of reach on your street for now. Not yet is an answer we give before your card is out.

The Friday report. One sentence on the week, then a line each: reviews ahead or behind, photos done, what Zoca did, each service getting ahead of the salon on the corner or holding the top 3, calls answered and what they asked, and what to do this week. It lives on your screen, not in an account manager's head.

How we know

Every Google fact here is from Google's own pages or reporting fetched on October 2, 2026, linked where it appears. The 24% and 5% come from our engine's September 26 export: 23 beauty and wellness businesses, 636 searches, each scanned from 9 points (the business address plus 8 points about 5 miles out), 5,615 map positions, top 3 counted per position. That is 23 businesses, an association and not a benchmark, and a same-day rescan agrees with itself about 72% of the time, because the map moves. The Phoenix price read is a scan on October 1 of the 61 salon websites Google surfaces for balayage in the area. Invoca's sample includes hair salons and publishes no salon-only figure, so the 26% and 49% run across every industry it tracked.

The 3 pages ranking first for "google ai mode local business" on October 2 (Whitespark's guide from May 22, 2026, and 2 agency guides updated in July) tell you to fix your profile and gather reviews, and they are right. None of the 3 names the booking partners, the opt-out, or a salon.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google AI Mode book a salon appointment?

Yes, for US Search Labs users since November 17, 2025. AI Mode finds an open slot and hands the client to Booksy, Fresha or Vagaro to finish (Google). The salon has to be on one of those 3 with its Google connection switched on.

Why is Google calling my business?

A client nearby asked Google for a price, an open slot, or a booking, and your profile was one of the names it picked. Google's help page gives 3 reasons: booking appointments, checking wait times, and confirming price and availability (Google).

Which booking apps work with Google AI Mode?

Booksy, Fresha and Vagaro, named by Google on November 17, 2025. Booksy says there is no extra fee or commission on an AI Mode booking (Booksy). A salon on another calendar can still be found and called, but AI Mode cannot write into it today.

Should I opt out of Google automated calls?

You can, in Business Profile settings under Advanced settings, or by telling the caller "Please remove my business from your list." I would not. 26% of Google's AI pricing calls went unanswered and 49% of the answered ones gave no price (Invoca). Opting out puts you on the list the client is told could not be reached.
