Is Yelp worth it for salons? Fewer people read it, more machines do

By Ashish Verma, founder and CEO of Zoca. Last updated October 3, 2026.

The short answer. Is Yelp worth it for salons? The free page, yes. The ad, not until you count what it sends. Fewer people check Yelp each year, but one study counted 512,680 AI answers pointing to yelp.com in 3 months (Foundation and AirOps via PPC Land, May 2026). The claimed page is the owner's way in.

Key facts.

  • 48% of US consumers used Yelp to check a local business in 2022, down from 53% in 2021, in BrightLocal's 2023 survey of 1,117 people.
  • 45% of US adults used an AI assistant to check a local business in BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 people, up from 6% a year earlier, and Yelp was outside the top 3.
  • AI answers pointed to yelp.com 512,680 times in the last quarter of 2025, 3.4 times the next directory, in a Foundation and AirOps study of more than 28 million answers.
  • ChatGPT showed yelp.com on 0 source chips in the 20 logged-out prompts I ran on September 11 and September 24, 2026, across Phoenix, Dallas and Philadelphia.
  • Yelp's advertising revenue fell 3% to $342 million in the second quarter of 2026 while its other revenue, which includes data licensing, grew 98% to $33 million, per its shareholder letter filed with the SEC.

Fewer humans, more machines. Here is what that means for a 3-chair salon.

Yelp vs Google reviews: where do salon clients look now?

On Google first, and on Yelp less each year. BrightLocal asks US consumers every year which sites they used to check a local business, and by 2026 Yelp is outside the top 3: Google, Facebook and an AI assistant.

Google fell too, from 87% to 71%, while the assistant grew from 6% to 45% in a year. Apple Maps, which Yelp supplies with its data (Axios via Yahoo Finance, July 2026) and a salon claims through Apple Business Connect, went from 14% to 27% (BrightLocal 2026). People moved to places that answer instead of list.

For salons the gap was already wide 4 years ago: 72% of clients said they found their salon on Google, 15% on Yelp (Phorest via Salon Today, 2022, sample size not stated). What is left is not small. 28 million devices opened the Yelp app in an average month of 2025, 22 million reviews were written that year, and the total stands at 330 million (Yelp Fast Facts, Yelp Q4 2025 letter). What fell is the share of the choosing that happens there, and choosing is the only part a salon pays for.

Which AI assistants read Yelp?

Perplexity has licensed Yelp since 2024 and ChatGPT since 2026, and none of the pages ranking for this question mention it. In March 2024 Perplexity licensed Yelp's maps, reviews, photos and business details through Yelp's Fusion program, with a promise not to train on them (Maginative, March 2024). In February 2026 Yelp told shareholders it had signed with OpenAI (Q4 2025 letter), and on July 23 Axios reported what it covers: Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details inside ChatGPT answers, with Yelp's branding and links, on a design OpenAI controls, terms undisclosed (Axios via Yahoo Finance, July 2026). By August Yelp's letter said its ratings and reviews "recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience" (Q2 2026 letter).

Foundation and AirOps put a size on it. They read more than 28 million AI answers to local questions in the last quarter of 2025, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode, and counted each time one pointed to 1 of 6 directories. Yelp got 512,680, 3.4 times the next, the Better Business Bureau at 149,710. 340,721 of Yelp's came from Google's AI Mode and 146,196 from Perplexity. ChatGPT and Gemini together were about 5% (PPC Land, May 2026). Beauty and personal care was Yelp's biggest category, 24.1% of every Yelp mention tracked, 9.4 times StyleSeat and 12 times Vagaro (Foundation, updated July 2026). 3 caveats. The set was 6 directories, so Google Maps was not in the race. Who paid is not stated. And 95% of the pointing came from 2 assistants, neither of them the one 45% of consumers named.

So I checked the one they did name. On September 11 I ran a 15-prompt test of how ChatGPT recommends local businesses, asking for the best salon, nail studio, barbershop, med spa and lash studio in Phoenix, Dallas and Philadelphia: 88 businesses named, 21 distinct sources on the answer chips, yelp.com 0 of them (log). On September 24, 2 months after the deal was reported, I ran the 5 Phoenix prompts again: 29 businesses named, 9 distinct chip labels, Yelp 0. What changed was the card above the answer. A place card with a star rating, a category and open or closed appeared on 4 of 5 prompts, against 3 of 15 on September 11, and neither the card nor most of the 29 ratings named a source. Then 3 of the prompts on Perplexity. On the 1 answer whose full source list I could read, 4 of 15 sources were yelp.com, 2 salon pages and 2 of Yelp's own search results for balayage in Phoenix (log). 8 answers in 1 city on 1 day. Read it as a shape.

The assistant does not go to Yelp to discover you. Getting recommended by AI assistants starts on a best-of list, a booking marketplace, your own site. Then the assistant checks whether you hold up: a rating, a count, a photo, hours that match. Yelp is one of the places it checks, out loud on Perplexity and, by Yelp's own account, quietly on ChatGPT. A Yelp page that agrees with your Google profile and your website is corroboration. An unclaimed one with 3 photos from 2016 is a hole in the story.

The Yelp Assistant and the Book now on Vagaro button

If your calendar is Vagaro and the client is on an iPhone, the Yelp door now opens straight into your book. If it is anything else, a Yelp visitor still gets a phone number and a website link, the same as in 2019, and the call has to be answered.

On April 21, 2026 Yelp shipped 35 features around a rebuilt Yelp Assistant that works in every category, beauty included (Yelp, April 2026). On iOS, a client reading your Yelp page or chatting with the Assistant can tap "Book now on Vagaro," land on your Vagaro scheduling page, and pick the service, the provider and the time. Android and desktop are promised for later in 2026 (Vagaro via Yahoo Finance, April 2026). Yelp says the Assistant made about 10% of its Request a Quote projects in the second quarter, and that AI search calls to its API grew 20 times in a year (Q2 2026 letter, PPC Land).

This is the door moving again. The front door for a city salon was once Yelp, then the map. Now nearly half of consumers ask an assistant that names 3, and across 350,000 locations ChatGPT recommends 1.2% (SOCi, January 2026). Yelp's response is to stand behind the new door with its 330 million reviews, a rational move for the company that holds them.

What Yelp's own numbers say about the ad

Yelp's ad line is shrinking while its data line grows, and that mostly answers the ad question. In the second quarter of 2026 Yelp took $376 million, up 1% on the year. Advertising was $342 million, down 3%. 510,000 locations paid for ads, down from 515,000. The line that grew was "other revenue," up 98% to $33 million, and Yelp names data licensing, including the OpenAI partnership, as part of why (Q2 2026 letter). The ad is sold to half a million locations, and the reviews are now also sold to the machines that answer for everyone else. Both are legitimate, and only one of them needs your money.

The ad starts at $5 a day and can be paused or cancelled any time (Yelp). The 3 pages that rank for this exact question were written in 2019, 2019 with a 2025 touch-up, and December 2023. 0 of 3 mention an AI assistant. 0 of 3 mention your Google profile. The freshest number in them is a Yelp review count of 192 million, which is 138 million reviews ago (Sunny Storm, Sola Salon Studios, The Media Captain). Their advice, claim the page and treat the ad as a maybe, was right. It answered a question from before the machines.

The ad pages skip one more thing. Of the roughly 22 million reviews written in 2025, Yelp's software recommended 70%, set 17% aside as not recommended, removed 11%, and 2% were deleted by the writer (Yelp, February 2026). Yelp's guidelines say "Businesses should never ask customers to write reviews" (Yelp Content Guidelines). So the habit you build for Google, asking 1 client in 10 at the chair, does not transfer. On Yelp the page has to be complete, and the reviews come or they do not.

Should a salon pay for Yelp ads?

Not first. 3 steps, in this order, and the first 2 cost nothing.

  1. Claim and complete, for the machine as much as the person. Category, hours, the same name, address and phone as your Google profile, 20 photos of the work with the service in the caption, a service list with prices, and the booking link. It is a 30-minute job. The page is being read whether or not a human opens it.
  2. Count before you pay. For 30 days, ask every new client 1 question at the chair: Google, Instagram, a friend, Yelp, or an assistant. Write it on the ticket. A booking link with a Yelp tag on it shows what came through online, and the question at the chair covers the calls. If Yelp brings 2 of 20 new faces, the unpaid page is the whole answer. Between December 2025 and July 2026 we mined 3,709 calls with owners, and the thing raised first, everywhere, was reviews and who comes up first on Google. When I visited salons from Phoenix to Queens to Dallas, 7 of 10 owners I asked had no reliable way to get new clients. The Discovery Agent at Zoca was built to answer that from her own numbers, starting with where last month's new clients came from.
  3. Pay against the count, with a stop date. If the count says Yelp sends people in your city, $5 a day for 60 days with the same question at the chair is a fair test. If the count does not move, stop, and put the $300 into the photos and the reviews on the profile the 71% still open.

Where Zoca fits

This piece is about the first break at the front door, nobody finds you, in the one place the machines check and most owners stopped looking, and about the owner who cannot say what Yelp sends her. When Zoca is hired for that, the job runs like this.

The read, before you pay. We look at your zip code in your own numbers: how many people nearby are looking for each thing you do, who comes up first for each on the map and in the assistant's answer, how fast they add reviews, and which of your services Google does not know you offer. The Yelp page is read as one of the places the assistant checks, and whether it agrees with your Google profile. The free Google Business Profile Optimizer scores the profile the machine reads first, and the free keyword audit shows which service words your city types.

Two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent builds the profile and a page for each service, keeps every listing, Yelp among them, saying the same name, hours and services, and holds it there. It is a paid hire and results take weeks. When a Yelp visitor calls instead of tapping, the Front Desk Agent answers, and the Booking Agent puts Book on your site and your Google listing, with online bookings and payments through it free. The button on Yelp itself is Vagaro's, on iOS, and Zoca cannot put one there. Your half: reviews on Google at a pace we agree on, counted as how many clients you ask, photos of the work every week, and on Yelp, per Yelp's own rule, no asking.

One of 3 answers. Sometimes next week, because the work is good and the listings disagree with each other. Most of the time 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, because the top 3 for your service hold hundreds of reviews and yours does not yet. And sometimes not yet, because there is no thinner race on your street or the reviews are not there to enter one. Not yet is a real answer, given before your card is out.

The Friday report. One sentence on the week, then a grade for each thing that matters: reviews ahead or behind, photos done, what Zoca did, one line per service (in the race, holding top 3, waiting on reviews, get ahead of the salon on the corner by name), where last month's new clients came from, and what to do this week. It lives in the product on your screen, not in an account manager's head.

How we know

The consumer figures are BrightLocal's, 3 editions, 1,117, 1,141 and 1,002 US respondents, and the 2024 edition gives Yelp's fall as 9 points rather than a figure, so that is how it appears here. Yelp's numbers are from its shareholder letters filed with the SEC, its fast facts page and its trust report. The study is Foundation and AirOps's, 28 million answers, 6 directories, funding not stated, and its shares are shares of that set. The ChatGPT runs are mine: 15 prompts across 3 cities on September 11 and 5 Phoenix prompts on September 24, logged out, one prompt per fresh page, recording the chip labels ChatGPT attached. The Perplexity run is 3 Phoenix prompts on September 24, logged out, with the full source list readable on 1 of 3 before a sign-up wall I did not try to get past. The 3 ranking pages were read on September 24. The call corpus is 3,709 customer calls mined between December 2025 and July 2026, ranked by how many owners raised each thing unprompted. Every cited page was fetched the day this was written. The fresh run is 1 city, 1 day, 1 person, and it should be read as that.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yelp still relevant for salons in 2026?

For people, less each year: 48% of consumers checked it in 2022, down from 53%, and it is outside the top 3 in 2026 (BrightLocal). For machines, more: Perplexity has licensed it since 2024, ChatGPT since 2026, and beauty is its largest category in AI answers (Foundation). Claim the page.

Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews?

Yelp says its ratings and reviews began powering ChatGPT's local answers in mid 2026 (Q2 2026 letter). In my 20 September prompts, ChatGPT never showed yelp.com on a source chip, while its unattributed ratings and place cards grew. Yelp is a place it checks, not the place it discovers you.

Can I ask clients for Yelp reviews?

No. Yelp's guidelines say businesses should never ask customers to write reviews (Yelp), and in 2025 its software set aside 17% of new reviews as not recommended (Yelp). Ask for Google reviews at the chair, and let Yelp's come on their own.

How much do Yelp ads cost for a salon?

Yelp's floor is $5 a day, pause or cancel any time (Yelp). One agency's hairstylist case adds a $120 a month page upgrade and reports an average cost per click of $2.09 (The Media Captain, 2023). Run the 30-day count first, then decide.

The profile the assistant checks first is still your Google one. Run the free Google Business Profile Optimizer and see it the way a client and a machine see it, then make the Yelp page say the same thing. If you would rather have your zip code read for you, with where last month's new clients came from, book a demo and bring the service that fills most of your chairs.
