The short answer. There is no ChatGPT business listing to claim. To get ChatGPT to recommend your business, fix the 3 things it borrows: your Bing listing, your Yelp page with its request button switched on, and a page per service with a price. ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of 350,000 locations (SOCi, January 2026).
Key facts.
- OpenAI names 2 search providers on its help page, Microsoft and Shopify, and gives a business owner no profile to claim (OpenAI Help Center, read October 3, 2026).
- Yelp licenses its reviews, ratings, photos and business details to OpenAI for ChatGPT under a deal reported on July 23, 2026, with Request a Quote to follow (Axios via Yahoo Finance).
- In 5 Phoenix prompts I ran logged out on October 3, 2026, ChatGPT named 31 beauty businesses, showed Yelp as a source 0 times, and carried a Yelp request link tagged for OpenAI behind 16 of the 31.
- Of the 8 Yelp pages I opened after that run, all 8 were claimed, the 5 with a link behind ChatGPT's answer had Yelp's request button on, and the 3 without a link had it off.
- 31% of 1,002 US adults used ChatGPT for a local business recommendation in the past year, in BrightLocal's March 2026 survey.
If you typed your city into ChatGPT and your salon was not there, know first that there is nothing to sign up for. ChatGPT is already in most salons I walk into. It writes the captions and the reply to the 2-star review at 11pm. It has not brought the owner a client. This piece is about the same app from the other side of the counter, where her next client is asking it who to book. On October 3 I asked it 5 times for Phoenix, then read what sat behind the answers.
Is there a ChatGPT business listing?
No. OpenAI offers no profile for an owner to claim and no form to submit. Its help page gives a website owner one instruction: "To make a website eligible for inclusion, allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site." The line above it reads "Placement is not guaranteed" (OpenAI Help Center).
So the answer to how to list a business on ChatGPT is 3 other places and your own website.
Where does ChatGPT get local business data?
From 4 places, and it owns none of them, which is why it has nothing of its own for you to edit.
| What ChatGPT reads | Where it comes from | What you can claim |
|---|---|---|
| The pages it searches | Search partners. The 2 OpenAI names are Microsoft and Shopify (OpenAI). Its VP of engineering: "we use a set of services and Bing is an important one" (Search Engine Roundtable) | A Bing Places for Business listing, and a website its crawler can open |
| The names, stars and place cards | OpenAI's words: "trusted third-party providers" of "nearby business listings." It does not name them | Nothing directly. Keep one name, address, phone and hours everywhere |
| Yelp | Licensed since July 2026, on a design OpenAI controls (Axios via Yahoo Finance) | Your Yelp page, and the request button on it |
| The proof it quotes under a name | Best-of lists, trade directories, booking marketplaces, your own site | Your service pages, and a claim on each list |
Credit where it is due. Microsoft built the index and Yelp collected the reviews, and a client asking for a nail salon gets a better answer because OpenAI rented both. BUT when an assistant borrows 4 lists, the only person who can make them agree is you.
Keep the size of this door honest. 31% of US adults used ChatGPT for a local recommendation in the past year, and 97% of people who use AI this way check the answer against real reviews at least sometimes (BrightLocal, 1,002 US adults, March 2026). The client who hears your name from ChatGPT opens Google next.
Does ChatGPT use Yelp?
Yes, since July 2026, and not in the place I expected. In August Yelp told its shareholders that its "ratings and reviews recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience in relevant categories" and that the "Request-a-Quote integration with ChatGPT is coming soon" (Yelp Q2 2026 letter).
So I looked. On October 3 I ran the 5 Phoenix prompts I have run twice before: balayage, nail salon, skin fade, Botox, lash extensions.
ChatGPT named 31 businesses. A place card with stars, a category and open or closed sat above all 5 answers, up from 3 of 15 answers on September 11 and 4 of 5 on September 24. Yelp appeared on 0 source chips, the same as both earlier runs, and the same as one agency's 10 San Francisco searches on August 4 (WebFX).
Then I read the data the page loads with each answer. Behind 16 of the 31 names sat a link to that business's Yelp page with the request form open, tagged with OpenAI as the source. No other kind of Yelp link was there. Nothing on the logged-out screen showed it as a button, so I cannot say what a signed-in client sees. The wiring is in.
Which 16? I opened 8 Yelp pages by hand, 5 with a link and 3 without.
| Business | Yelp link behind ChatGPT's answer | ChatGPT showed | Its Yelp page showed | Request button on Yelp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hair salon | Yes | 4.9 on 1,377 reviews | 4.4 on 228 | On |
| Nail salon | Yes | 5.0 on 785 | 4.8 on 10 | On |
| Barbershop | Yes | 4.7 on 600+ | 4.2 on 136 | On |
| Med spa | Yes | 5.0 on about 1,484 | 5.0 on 31 | On |
| Lash studio | Yes | 4.9 on about 195 | 4.1 on 7 | On |
| Hair salon | No | 4.9 on 649 | 4.6 on 76 | Off |
| Barbershop | No | 4.9 on 1,000+ | 4.5 on 80 | Off |
| Lash studio | No | 4.8 on 127 | 4.7 on 94 | Off |
All 8 pages were claimed. What separated them was the request button: on for all 5 with a link, off for all 3 without. On a beauty page Yelp labels it "Request an appointment."
The stars tell a second story. The review count ChatGPT showed matched Yelp's on 0 of 8. The first salon's 4.9 on 1,377 has the shape of its Google profile, which read 4.9 on about 1,400 when I counted Phoenix's map results on September 15. So for these 8 businesses, ChatGPT's stars came from somewhere other than Yelp, and Yelp's part was the way to reach the owner. 8 pages on one night is a field note, and I would read it as one.
ChatGPT local SEO for a salon: what to fix this week
An assistant asks 3 things of a business: can I read you, do you answer, can I book you. For ChatGPT that is 6 fixes, about 2 hours, in this order.
Can it read you?
- Bing. Search your salon's name and city on Bing, then claim Bing Places for your salon. It costs nothing and imports from your Google Business Profile (Bing, October 2025).
- The crawler. Ask whoever built your website one question: is OAI-SearchBot allowed in? That is OpenAI's own condition for a site to be eligible.
- A page per service, with a price. In this run ChatGPT took its one lash price, about $130 for a classic full set, from a Fresha page. It quotes the number somebody wrote down, which is the case for listing prices online. In our Phoenix read on October 1, a balayage price was published on 16 of the 61 salon websites Google surfaces for the area.
- The lists. Run your own prompt logged out and write down the names on the source chips. In Phoenix there were 10 across 5 answers, none of them Yelp or Google. Look for a claim button on each. How those pages get picked is in the 15-prompt test of how ChatGPT recommends local businesses.
Do you answer?
- The Yelp page and its request button. Claim the page and match its name, hours, services and prices to your Google profile. Then log in at biz.yelp.com on a computer, because the app cannot do this, open Inbox, then Settings, switch on "Messaging Leads," and save (Yelp for Business). Then answer what comes. Yelp switches the button off on its own when a new message sits 7 days without a reply and nothing was answered in the past 30. One nail salon in my run had "Response time 4 hours, response rate 100%" printed beside its button. None of this needs an ad, and whether Yelp is worth paying for is a separate question.
Can it book you?
- The booking link. ChatGPT does not book a salon itself today. OpenAI's page lists reservations for restaurants only. The one beauty path I found belongs to a marketplace: since August 4, 2026, Fresha's listings can be read from inside ChatGPT, and the client finishes on Fresha (Fresha). For everyone else the booking happens on your own link, so it has to finish on a phone without a call.
Holding all 6 true every week is the work, and it is the first thing the Discovery Agent at Zoca does when it is hired: it reads the Google profile, the Bing listing, the Yelp page and the website side by side and reports where they disagree.
Where Zoca fits
This article is about 2 of the 3 ways the front door breaks: ChatGPT cannot read you, so it names 6 other salons, or it reaches you through a request and nobody answers. Here is the job when Zoca is hired for it.
The read, before you pay. Your zip code in your numbers: how many people nearby are looking for each thing you do, which salon comes up first for each, which services Google does not know you offer, and where your 4 records disagree. The free website audit checks the page ChatGPT's crawler opens. The free Google Business Profile Optimizer scores the profile a client checks after ChatGPT names you.
Two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent writes and keeps a page per service with its price, and keeps the Google profile, the Bing listing and the facts on your Yelp page saying the same thing. The Front Desk Agent answers the call and the text at 9pm with a price and a slot. Roughly 52% of inquiries in the 3,709 customer calls we mined between December 2025 and July 2026 arrived after hours. The Booking Agent runs online booking and payments free, so the link a client is handed finishes without a call. Your half: reviews on Google at a pace we agree on, counted as how many clients you ask, photos of the work every week, and the Yelp account, claimed in your name. The limits: ChatGPT keeps no listing, so nobody can list you there, us included. The Yelp request button is switched on inside your account, and the reply in that inbox is yours. The Discovery and Front Desk agents are paid hires (pricing).
One of 3 answers. Sometimes next week, because the request button was off and your prices were never written where a machine could find them. Sometimes 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, because 3 salons on your street have a page per service and you have one page. And sometimes not yet, because nobody nearby is asking for the service you want to be known for, or you have 11 reviews against 40 salons. Not yet is an answer we give before your card is out.
The Friday report. One sentence on the week, then a line each: reviews ahead or behind, photos done, what Zoca did, each service getting ahead of the salon on the corner or holding the top 3, which of the 4 records drifted, and what to do this week. It lives on your screen, not in an account manager's head.
How we know
The ChatGPT run is mine: 5 prompts naming Phoenix, October 3, 2026, chatgpt.com logged out with web search on, one prompt per fresh page, no follow-ups. I recorded every business named, every source chip, whether a place card appeared, and every yelp.com address in the page, including the data block loaded with the answer. All 16 links had one form, Yelp's request page for that business with OpenAI named as the source. Yelp refused a scripted read of its pages and I did not push past it, so I opened 8 by hand and 8 is the sample. No request was sent to any business. 5 prompts, 1 city, 1 night. The log is in the sources.
The earlier runs are September 11 (15 prompts, 3 cities) and September 24 (5 Phoenix prompts). OpenAI's help page and Axios both refused an automated fetch, so I read the first in a browser and quote the second from the Yahoo Finance copy.
2 things I could not verify and left out: who supplies ChatGPT's "nearby business listings," and whether Request a Quote is live for signed-in users. One agency page says a button is showing and links no primary source, so I report only what I saw.
I also read the 4 pages I could open that rank for this search. Their advice, keep your facts the same everywhere, is right. 0 of 4 mention Yelp, 10 weeks after the deal. 1 of 4 mentions Bing Places. 0 of 4 mention a salon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I list my business on ChatGPT?
You cannot, because OpenAI keeps no business listing to claim. ChatGPT reads 4 borrowed records instead: a search index Microsoft supplies, an unnamed listings feed, Yelp since July 2026, and the pages written about you. Claim Bing Places, complete your Yelp page, and publish a priced page per service.
What is ChatGPT local SEO for a salon?
It is making your salon readable in the places ChatGPT borrows from, because it keeps no list of its own. In 5 Phoenix prompts on October 3, 2026, it named 31 businesses and showed 10 sources, none of them Yelp or Google. The work is Bing, Yelp and a priced service page.
Should I ask clients for Yelp reviews so ChatGPT recommends me?
No. Yelp's guidelines say "Businesses should never ask customers to write reviews." On the 8 Phoenix Yelp pages I opened on October 3, 2026, the request button separated the businesses linked from ChatGPT's answer: on for 5 of 5 linked, off for 3 of 3 unlinked. Ask for Google reviews at the chair.
Can ChatGPT book an appointment at my salon?
Not by itself today. OpenAI's help page lists reservations for restaurants only, through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. Since August 4, 2026, Fresha's marketplace can be read from inside ChatGPT, and the client finishes on Fresha. Every other salon's client is handed a link, so the booking page has to work on a phone.
