Your salon hours are a Google ranking signal. Here is the count.

Introduction

If you close on Sunday and have wondered whether Google holds it against you, this one is for you. It costs you a place in that day's searches, not your rank for the week. Being open when someone searches is the fifth-ranked factor in the Google map pack, the 3 listings on the map, above your star rating, in the latest survey of 47 local search practitioners (Whitespark, November 2025). "Nail salon near me open" alone is searched 135,000 times a month in the US (Clicks.so). On September 17, 2026, I read the posted hours of 82 salons, nail salons and barbershops that win a city-wide pack. Open on Sunday: 27 of 28 nail winners, 18 of 24 barbers, 10 of 30 hair salons. The hours gap belongs to hair salons.

The searches that carry the word "open"

A client who types "open" wants a chair today, and Google answers with the pack, filtered to whoever is open right now. Her words, by category:

Search, US monthly volumeNailHairBarber
"[category] near me open"135,0009,900
"[category] near me open now"33,10014,800 ("salon near me open now")8,100
"[category] open on sunday"20,100 and 10,800 (plural and singular)12,100 ("salons open on sunday") and 5,400 ("hair salons open on sunday")6,600 ("barbers open on sunday near me")
"walk in [category] near me"6,60022,400 and 18,100 (plural and singular)18,100
"[category] open late"4,400

Nail and hair volumes from Clicks.so (hair list, barber list), read September 17, 2026. Barber "open now," Sunday and walk-in figures are Google Keyword Planner, August 2025 to July 2026, via MarketKeep. A blank cell means the list did not carry that phrase.

The nail column is the largest by far. The hair column splits between Sunday, the day most hair salons close, and walk-ins.

What Google does with your hours

Google still calls hours optional (Google). In late 2023 the people who track rankings for a living noticed listings moving with the clock, and I am glad they did.

Joy Hawkins at Sterling Sky wrote it up on December 7, 2023: from November, closed businesses dropped in the pack and climbed back when they reopened, positions falling "from 1 to 10, and further" (Sterling Sky). BrightLocal ran a controlled version the same month: 50 locations in 10 categories, day spas among them, each scanned on a 7-by-7 grid twice a day for 3 days, in hours and out. Rankings were higher during opening hours in every category but movie theaters, and fast food gained 2.4 positions on average (BrightLocal).

Google confirmed it 8 days later. Its Search Liaison wrote that "we've long used 'openness' as part of our local ranking systems, and it recently became a stronger signal for non-navigational queries," and that this "might change in various ways" (quoted by BrightLocal, December 15, 2023). Non-navigational means nobody typed your name.

The survey adds the part owners feel: "when your business is open you can be sitting pretty at #1 in the local results, and then 60 minutes before you close you'll start to drop off" (Whitespark). A salon that closes at 6 starts fading at 5. It is a filter on who is in the running, not a reward for long hours.

What 82 pack winners actually post

I went back to the 90 businesses we counted for reviews on September 15, the 3 listings Google put in the pack for "hair salon," "nail salon" and "barbershop" plus the city name in 10 US cities, and read the 7-day hours on each. 82 resolved to a single listing and 8 did not.

Source: my own census, log in the source list. Regular hours as displayed. Not a benchmark.

The nail winners run 7 days, 26 of 28, and the barbers are close behind at 18 of 24, the only group that goes home early on weekdays, 6 of them by 6 p.m. The hair salons are the outlier. 20 of 30 are dark on Sunday, 12 on Monday, 9 on both, and 7 of 30 are open all week. They make it up on weeknights: 20 of 30 are open past 7 p.m. at least 1 weekday, with a median latest close of 8, the latest of the 3 groups. 1 listing in 82 closes on Saturday.

Hold the two tables together. Roughly 17,500 searches a month in the hair column carry the word Sunday (Clicks.so), and on that day, in these 10 cities, 20 of the 30 salons that win the weekday pack are out of the running. That is the matching problem in one row: people looking on one side, salons on the other, and the one chosen is whoever is there when they meet. Where the looking is thick and the salons are thin, one change is enough, and where it is the reverse, the street decided before she signed the lease. Most of her year sits in between, and Sunday hair here is a pocket the others have left open.

Should my salon open on Sundays?

Not for the ranking. Hours are chair-hours. Nearly 48% of hairdressers and cosmetologists are self-employed (Boulevard, 2026), and a solo who opens Sunday is closing another day or working 7. The hair winners already made that trade, Sunday and Monday off for weeknights until 8, and nobody should undo it for a signal Google is still adjusting.

The narrower question is whether there is a day or an hour where people are looking, the map thins out, and you were open anyway. 3 cases.

The salon that opens Sunday and posts nothing. If the door is unlocked at 10 and the profile says closed, Google does not know you are open, and 62% of consumers say they would avoid a business whose listed information turned out to be wrong (BrightLocal, 2023 survey). Post the hours you keep.

The salon with a stylist who works Sundays. 3 of the 10 hair winners with Sunday hours keep it to 5 or 6 hours, 10 to 3 in Tucson and Boise, 10 to 4 in Nashville. A 5-hour Sunday with 1 chair staffed is the whole listing open for the search, on the day 2 of every 3 salons on the corner are dark. The but sits beside it: the client who finds that chair at 8 on Saturday night still has to book it before you open.

The barbershop that closes at 6. 6 of 24 do, and by the survey's account they begin fading at 5, the hour the after-work client is searching. 1 weeknight until 8 is 2 more hours in that day's searches.

And then the case that is not about hours at all. Phorest looked at 5,000+ salons in 2019: 54% of appointments were booked during opening hours, 28% in the evening after close, 18% before open (Salon Today). In a September 2025 survey of 1,011 people, 81% of salon and spa regulars said they call about appointments outside normal hours at least sometimes, and 71% had given up on a booking because reaching someone was too hard (Zenoti). In the 3,709 customer calls we mined between December 2025 and July 2026, roughly 52% of the inquiries owners described arrived after hours. The listing is telling the truth at 9 p.m., and the tap still has to land somewhere. This is the break we hired the Front Desk Agent at Zoca for: the call and the text that arrive while the profile says closed, answered and booked into the calendar she already keeps.

The 24-hour listing, and why not

The census had 1, a Dallas barber posting "Open 24 hours, appointment required." Sterling Sky notes that 24-hour businesses hold their place in evening searches while everyone else drops out (Sterling Sky). BrightLocal found 24-hour listings did not necessarily gain, and warned against editing hours to work the signal (BrightLocal). The client who finds you "open" at 11 p.m., calls, and gets nobody is inside that 62%.

2 housekeeping items. Special hours cover a temporary change of up to 6 days in a row, and Google says to confirm holiday hours even when they match your regular ones (Google). And "Accepts walk-ins" is a checkbox in the profile, what Google reads when someone types "walk in hair salons near me" 22,400 times a month. Of the 36 winners whose search panel showed a Highlights line, 32 had it ticked.

Where Zoca fits

Hours are the one map signal an owner sets in an afternoon, so most of this she does herself. The rest is the job, in the order we describe it to her.

First, the read, before she pays: how many people nearby are looking for each thing she does, with and without the word Sunday, who comes up first that day, how fast those salons add reviews, and whether Google knows her hours at all. This article was about 2 of the 3 breaks, out of the running on the day people are looking, and the tap after close that lands on nobody. The read says which is hers, in her numbers. The free Google Business Profile Optimizer and keyword audit show most of it before she talks to anyone.

Second, the two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent keeps hours, special hours and the walk-in box current and rereads them monthly against the winners near her. The Front Desk Agent answers the call and text after close. The Booking Agent puts the Book button on the listing, and online bookings and payments through it are free. The Engage Agent follows the client who tapped and did not finish. Her half: post the hours she keeps, decide the Sunday herself, reviews at a pace she can hold, photos of the work, sometimes a service the people looking nearby want. The limits: the Discovery Agent is paid and cannot add a Sunday to a calendar that does not have one, writing a booking into an incumbent calendar depends on what it allows, and Zoca cannot text her clients until bookings run through it.

Third, the honest answer, one of three. Next week, when the hours were wrong or missing and fixing them puts her in Sunday's searches by Sunday. 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, when the Sunday pack near her is thin but her pages and photos do not exist yet. Or not yet, when 27 of 28 winners near her already open Sunday, or she has too few reviews to get ahead of anyone. Not yet is a real answer.

Fourth, the Friday report: reviews ahead or lagging, photos in or not, what Zoca did, one line per service (in the race, holding top 3, waiting on reviews), how many actually booked after close, do this week. It lives in the product on her screen, not in an account manager's head, which is how she knows whether the Sunday was worth it.

How we know

The census is my own. On the evening of September 17, 2026, from a logged-out browser, I loaded the Google knowledge panel or Maps place page for each of the 90 businesses in the September 15 pack census and read the 7-day regular hours as displayed, plus the "Accepts walk-ins" box where the search panel showed a Highlights line. 82 resolved to a single listing. 8 were excluded: 2 resolved to a different business, 3 had several locations under one name, and 3 returned no single match. Special hours were not visible on any panel. It is one evening, 10 cities, and city-wide pack winners, not the 3 a client sees from her block. The full list is in the source log.

The search volumes are Clicks.so's, read the same day, and Google Keyword Planner via MarketKeep for the barber phrases. Keyword tools estimate and disagree, so read the figures as order of magnitude. Every other figure is linked where it appears, with its date. The call corpus is 3,709 customer calls mined between December 2025 and July 2026.

Questions owners ask

Do business hours affect Google Maps ranking?

Yes. "Business is Open at Time of Search" is the fifth-ranked pack factor in the 2026 practitioner survey (Whitespark), and Google said in December 2023 that openness "recently became a stronger signal for non-navigational queries" (via BrightLocal).

Do salons open on Sunday rank higher?

No, but they are in the running on a day when most hair salons are not. In my census of 82 pack winners in 10 cities, 10 of 30 hair salons were open Sunday against 27 of 28 nail salons and 18 of 24 barbershops. "Salons open on sunday" is searched 12,100 times a month (Clicks.so).

Should I list my salon as open 24 hours on Google?

No. BrightLocal found 24-hour listings did not necessarily gain, and 62% of consumers say they would avoid a business whose listed information was wrong (BrightLocal). Post the hours a client can reach a person or a working booking button, and let the button take the 46% of bookings made outside opening hours (Salon Today).

To see how your hours, walk-in box and Book button read to someone searching at 6:40 on a Sunday, run the free Google Business Profile Optimizer and the free keyword audit. If you would rather have the hours read against the winners near you and the after-hours phone answered, book a demo and bring your Sunday.

Get Found When They Search
Being open at search time is the fifth Google pack factor. 135,000 people a month search "nail salon near me open." I read the hours on 82 pack winners.
