Google Business Profile suspended: how a salon gets it back

By Ashish Verma, founder and CEO of Zoca. Last updated October 3, 2026.

The short answer. For a salon with its Google Business Profile suspended, the way back is to fix the one field that fails Google's guidelines, then appeal once with documents that carry the same business name and address as the profile. Google says "Appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days" (Google).

Key facts.

  • Google states that "Appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days" on its appeals help page.
  • In the 10 salon, barbershop and spa suspension threads I read on Google's Business Profile Community on September 24, 2026, the owner points to the field behind the suspension in 6.
  • Of the 10 beauty-business suspension threads I read on Google's Business Profile Community on September 24, 2026, the 4 that show an outcome ended in 2 days, 17 days, about 10 weeks, and never.
  • Google's label was "deceptive content" or "misleading content" on 5 of the 10 beauty-business suspension threads I read on Google's Business Profile Community on September 24, 2026.
  • Keywords in the business name rank third among Google Maps factors in Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors 2026, a survey of 47 local search practitioners, and service words in the name are what Google's guidelines rule out.

On September 24, 2026 I read 10 suspension threads from salons, barbershops and spas on Google's own forum. In 6 the owner points to the field behind it.

What does it mean when a Google Business Profile is suspended?

A suspended profile is one Google has pulled from Search and Maps, or locked against your edits, because one field on it fails the guidelines. Google runs 2 kinds. A profile suspension takes down one listing, and an account restriction also means "you won't be able to create or claim other profiles" (Google).

On 5 of the 10 threads the email's label was "deceptive content" or "misleading content." That is a policy family, not a finding. Thryv tells its customers Google "will not provide context behind their decision" (Thryv), so the first job is yours: put each field beside the guideline and your license, and find the one that does not match.

The 3 edits that put a salon in the queue

For a salon the field is nearly always one of 3: a name with the services written into it, a suite that reads to Google like a rented mailbox, or an address changed after a move. In the latest survey of 47 local search practitioners, keywords in the business name rank third for who makes the 3 names on the map, and a visible address ranks seventh (Whitespark, November 2025). The 2 fields that move a salon up are the 2 that get it pulled.

The name with the services in it. Google wants the "real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery, and as known to customers." "Verizon Wireless 4G LTE" is out, "Verizon Wireless" is in, and location words and all capitals fail the same way (Google). On September 21, for the piece on Google Business Profile categories for salons, I counted the service word in the name on 85 of 99 Google Maps winners across 11 beauty services, and the ones that hold have the word on the door. A barbershop owner cut the keywords until the name matched his trade license "word-for-word" and was reinstated 17 days later (Google Business Profile Community, April 2026).

The suite that reads like a mailbox. A rented mailing address the business does not work from "isn't eligible for a Business Profile," and a co-working office qualifies only with clear signage, customers received there, and its own staff present during business hours (Google). A suite complex is a co-working space with mirrors, so it comes down to the sign. "An exterior, permanently affixed sign is required," a product expert told one executive-suite tenant (Google forum, December 2025). In the 101-studio Sola building I counted on September 13 for the piece on a Google Business Profile for independent hairstylists, 14 of 56 tenant listings carried the street address with no suite at all.

The move. After a move "you must verify your business again" (Google). A hair studio that moved from Florida to a Suite 4 in North Carolina was suspended on the address edit (Google forum, September 2025). Sterling Sky lists "excessive edits to important profile sections" as the first reason it sees (Sterling Sky, March 2026), and the smallest edits are on the threads too. A nail salon in Westfield, Indiana changed its main hours for a 10-inch snow closure on January 25, 2026 and was suspended for deceptive content the same day (Google forum, January 2026).

Beauty gets hit harder because supply got cheap. Nearly 48% of hairdressers and cosmetologists work for themselves (Boulevard, 2026), among 1,334,753 hair, nail and skin care businesses in the US in 2026, up 1.6% in a year (IBISWorld). The listing rules were written for a building with one name on it.

Why did Google suspend my business profile for deceptive content?

Because one field does not match what Google can verify, and the mismatch is filed under that policy whether it was a typo or a tactic. The 10 threads are below, each linked in the log in the source list.

The 2 reinstated owners who say what they attached sent a license carrying the profile's name and address. The nail salon owner wrote that while the profile was dark, typing its exact name into Google showed other nail salons nearby. For the weeks a profile is down, the search with your name in it belongs to the salon on the corner.

How do I get a suspended Google Business Profile reinstated?

Fix the field, then appeal once, with documents that carry the same business name and address as the profile. Google says up to 5 business days per decision. Sterling Sky says the wait "is normally about a week" and ran 5 to 6 weeks in early 2025 (Sterling Sky). My 4 outcomes ran 2 days, 17 days, about 10 weeks, and never.

Fix the field first. Edits on a suspended profile do not go live until it is reinstated, and Google sees them when it reviews the appeal (Google forum, April 2026). Name to match the license or the sign. Suite number in the address line. No service area on a storefront.

One appeal, papers attached. Google's list is 4 items: official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills. The rule that decides most cases: "check that the business name and address match the profile" (Google). Since July 8, 2026 the files attach inside the appeal form (Search Engine Roundtable, July 2026), and Google's help page still says "you must submit it within 60 minutes or it won't be attached," so have the PDFs ready first. Send the license in the appeal, not on the profile. The Escondido salon was told to take hers down.

Then stop. "Do not submit multiple appeals for the same issue before receiving a decision" (Google), and "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review" (Google). The spa that tried a second profile had it rejected on sight (Google forum, January 2026). After a denial, Google's additional review form asks for the suspension date, the profile ID, the documents and the context (Google). After 2 denials, a dog trainer's screen read "You cannot submit another appeal at this time" (Google forum, December 2025). The volunteer experts on Google's forum escalate only after about 14 days of silence (Google forum, September 2025).

Moving salons without going dark

Edit the profile you have, put your name on the new door first, and change the address once. I read 3 of the pages that rank for this query, Thryv, BrightLocal and Sterling Sky, and 0 of 3 mention a salon, a stylist or a suite. The order that keeps the listing and the reviews:

  1. Edit the profile you have. Never create a second one. Google rejects a duplicate on sight (Google).
  2. Put your name on the new door first. A printed sign fixed to the door or window, in the exact name on the profile. Google's video is at least 30 seconds and wants the name "clearly printed on a permanent fixture" (Google).
  3. Move the paper before the pin. License, booking page, Instagram bio and website go to the new address the same day, so the documents match if an appeal is needed.
  4. Change the address once, and nothing else that week. "Too many edits at once" is on Thryv's list too.
  5. Expect to verify again, by the method Google picks, which "can't be changed," with a review of up to 5 business days (Google).
  6. For a closure, use special hours. That is what the expert told the snowed-in nail salon, in place of editing the main hours (Google forum, January 2026).

In the 3,709 customer calls we mined between December 2025 and July 2026, reviews and who comes up first on Google were the first thing owners raised, everywhere. A suspension takes both to zero for as long as it lasts. The Discovery Agent at Zoca reads the name, address and category fields against these guidelines and against the license before it edits anything, because the fastest way to lose a listing is to improve it in the wrong field.

Where Zoca fits

This article is about the first of the 3 ways the front door breaks: nobody finds you, because the profile is dark. The appeal is yours to file, and Google's clock is Google's. Here is the rest of the job when Zoca is hired for it.

The read, before you pay. We look at your zip code in your own numbers: how many people nearby are looking for each thing you do, who comes up first, how fast they add reviews, and which of your services Google does not know you offer. First, though, the profile is read field by field against the guidelines above and against the license, because a name with 3 service words in it or a suite with no sign on the door is a suspension waiting for its edit. The free Google Business Profile Optimizer scores the profile the way Google reads it, and the free keyword audit shows which service words your city types, so the service goes in the category and stays out of the name.

Two halves. Zoca's half: the Discovery Agent sets the name, address, suite line and category to the rule, keeps them the same on the website and the booking page, builds a page for each service, and when a move is coming, changes one field at a time. It is a paid hire. The appeal, the video walk-through and the wait are yours, and it cannot make Google's 5 days shorter. Your half: the sign on the door, the license at the new address, reviews at a pace we agree on, counted as how many clients you ask, and photos of the work every week. Once the profile is live, the Front Desk Agent answers the call and the after-hours text, and the Booking Agent puts Book on the listing, with online bookings and payments through it free. Writing into some calendars depends on what that calendar allows, and Zoca cannot text your clients for a review until bookings run through it.

One of 3 answers. Sometimes next week, because the listing is back and only in the wrong category. Most of the time 60 to 90 days, said out loud at the start, because the weeks the profile was dark went to the salon on the corner and the reviews have to be earned back. And sometimes not yet, because the profile is still suspended and nothing we do shows on a map until Google says so. Not yet is a real answer, given before your card is out.

The Friday report. One sentence on the week, then a grade for each thing that matters: reviews ahead or behind, photos done, what Zoca did, one line per service (in the race, holding top 3, waiting on reviews, get ahead of the salon on the corner by name), and what to do this week. It lives in the product on your screen, not in an account manager's head, so the answer is the same whoever picks up.

How we know

Every Google rule quoted here is from a Google help page fetched on September 24, 2026 and linked beside it. The threads are public on Google's Business Profile Community, found with searches limited to that forum for salon, nail, barbershop, spa, stylist, suite and moved. I read every beauty-business suspension thread those searches returned and logged the 10 plus 8 adjacent ones. Every product expert on them is a volunteer, not a Google employee, and says so. It is what 10 owners posted, read on 1 day, and the 4 outcomes are 4 outcomes, not a rate. The Whitespark ranking is an expert poll of 47 practitioners published November 6, 2025. The 56-tenant count and the 85 of 99 name count are mine, from earlier articles, logged in the source list. The call corpus is 3,709 customer calls mined between December 2025 and July 2026, ranked by how many owners raised each thing unprompted.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a Google Business Profile reinstated?

Google says each appeal decision takes up to 5 business days (Google). Sterling Sky puts the usual wait at about a week (Sterling Sky). In the 4 salon and barbershop threads with an outcome, it ran 2 days, 17 days, about 10 weeks, and never.

Can I create a new Google Business Profile while mine is suspended?

No. Google's instruction is "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review" (Google), and an account restriction blocks creating or claiming profiles at all. The spa that tried had the new one rejected on creation.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended after I changed my address?

Because a verified profile that moves has to verify again (Google), and the address edit is read alongside every other field. Put the sign on the new door and update the license first, then change the address once, with the lease and a utility bill ready for an appeal.

What documents does Google accept for a Business Profile appeal?

Google lists 4: official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills (Google). The business name and address on each have to match the profile. The help page gives 60 minutes to submit once the evidence form is open, so have the PDFs ready.

Before you edit anything on a live profile, run the free Google Business Profile Optimizer and see which fields sit outside the rules Google enforces. If you would rather have the listing read against the guidelines, corrected in the right order, and watched every week, book a demo and bring your license and your suite number.
